Jimmy Kimmel brought out his son last night on his show to speak out about the children’s healthcare funding crisis. CHIP is the children’s health insurance program. It covers about 9 million kids whose parents make too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but don’t have access to affordable coverage through their jobs.
He shared that his seventh month old son, Billy, has suffered from heart complications and just had his second heart surgery last week. Billy has one more surgery left and is doing great. But, other children like Billy aren’t as lucky and would need CHIP to afford these surgeries. Kimmel says, “Imagine getting that letter, literally not knowing how you will afford to save your child’s life,” he said. “This is not a hypothetical. Around 2 million C.H.I.P. kids have serious chronic congenital problems. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough of this. I don’t know what could be more disgusting than putting a tax cut that mostly goes to rich people ahead of the lives of children.”
He tearfully explained that Congress had let funding expire in favor of tax cuts for their one percenter donors. He says, “Overwhelmingly Democrats and Republicans supported it, until now. Now C.H.I.P. has become a bargaining chip. It’s on the back burner while they work out their new tax plans. Which means parents of children with cancer and diabetes and heart problems are about to get letters saying their coverage could be cut off next month. Merry Christmas, right?”
