According to a report from the National Safety Council found, that Americans are more likely to die from an accidental opioid overdose than from a motor vehicle crash. Data collected in 2017 shows that there is a 1 in 96 chance of dying from opioids and the odds of dying in car accident is 1 in 103.

The opioid epidemic has drawn the attention of federal and state lawmakers looking for solutions. In the most recent example of its impact, police in Chico, Calif., said one person died and more than a dozen people were hospitalized after suspected fentanyl leads to a mass drug overdose at a home.

Opioid pain relievers are the most fatally abused drugs. According to National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 49,000 people die from an opioid overdose in 2017.

“The nation’s opioid crisis is fueling the Council’s grim probabilities, and that crisis is worsening with an influx of illicit fentanyl,” read a statement from the NSC published Monday.

Last fall, the Senate passed legislation to combat the nation’s opioid crisis by reinforcing programs to treat addiction, closely monitoring prescriptions and updating information on alternative treatments to addictive drugs.
