On Monday night Feb 13th 2023, a gunman killed three students and wounded five people at Michigan State University, leaving the campus in a state of panic and grief. The shooting prompted hours of sheltering in place for students and others on the East Lansing campus. Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the Michigan State University Police, described it as “a nightmare that we are living tonight.” At Cosmo Insurance, we want to express our deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and the entire MSU community.
In addition to the immediate emotional toll of such a tragedy, the financial burden can also be immense. This is where having the right individual insurance can help. It can provide financial assistance for medical bills, funeral costs, and other expenses that can arise in the aftermath of such an event. At Cosmo Insurance, we understand the importance of having the right insurance coverage for unexpected events, and we urge everyone to consider their insurance needs carefully.
The suspected shooter, identified as Anthony Dwayne McRae, 43, had no affiliation with the university. He was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a confrontation with law enforcement officials in the adjacent city of Lansing. As of Tuesday morning, the five people who were transported to E.W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing remained in critical condition. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
The shooting took place in two buildings on campus that were unlocked and “open to the public,” according to Rozman. In the aftermath of the tragedy, officials called on staff and the community to stay away to allow law enforcement officers to work. Students on campus reported on social media that they were hiding or were barricaded as officers fanned out.
At Cosmo Insurance, we stand with the MSU community in mourning this terrible loss. We hope that those affected can find some measure of comfort in knowing that they are not alone, and that they can turn to their insurance coverage for assistance during this difficult time.
