Parkinson’s Disease Can be Slowed by Vigorous Exercise

There are 1 million Americans living with Parkinson’s disease.  Parkinson’s disease is the result of impaired or dying cells in the part of the brain responsible for movement.

Researchers at Northwestern University and the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine wanted to see whether high intensity exercise was safe for patients with Parkinson’s disease.  Five years with experimenting they have found that yes it helps with the disease’s symptoms as well.  They found that vigorous exercise is a safe way to potentially delay the progression of Parkinson’s disease.  Researches had participants broken into three groups: those who followed a vigorous weekly workout regimen for six months, those who followed one for the same duration and a control group that did not exercise.  No groups were taking medications at the time and all who exercised used only a treadmill.  Symptoms of the disease did not change or improve significantly for most of those who took part in high-intensity exercise. Participants in the moderate-intensity exercise group saw their symptoms worsen by 7.5 percent, while researchers observed symptoms of those in the control group worsen by 15 percent.

Exercising is proven to benefit everyone’s lives regardless if you have Parkinson’s disease or not.  It is important to stay active throughout your life to keep your body healthy and strong.  Cosmo Insurance Agency believes it’s important for every individual to stay active.
