If you are under 26 you are able to stay on your parents plan. You are able to stay on your parents plan if you are at school, unemployed, living on your own, or even eligible for your employers plan.
Once you turn 26, you are no longer able to stay on your parents plan. Thankfully, you can sign up for insurance through the marketplace if you cannot get insurance through your. employer. You’ll also find out if you qualify for free or low-cost coverage available through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
If you are under 30, you can most likely qualify for catastrophic plans. These “catastrophic” plans usually have lower premiums and protect you from worst-case scenarios. In the Marketplace, catastrophic plans cover 3 doctor visits per year at no cost and free preventive benefits.
