Mothers are Bearing a Huge Mental Load During COVID-19. Here are Some Tips on How to Deal with This

Juggling work and kids has always been a challenge, but now with the COVID-19 shutting down schools, it’s taking a greater toll moms. Even in the best of times, many women bear the brunt of an unpaid workload which most working mom’s call the “second shift.” This includes caring for children, cleaning, cooking, doing laundry and countless other tasks. Now during this pandemic moms, are doing all the above on top of helping their kids through remote lesson plans, keeping cooped-up young ones occupied and fed.

Besides all the physical work women bear they also carry heavy “mental load” the emotional and psychic burden of remembering countless little details that cloud many moms’ thoughts and keep them up at night.

Mothers have found themselves feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, guilty and guilty for feeling guilty. Here are some tips to help moms who are dealing with an unusually heavy mental load during the pandemic:

Try to Keep Guilt to a Minimum

It’s common for many parents to feel bad that their kids can’t be with their friends or online school isn’t working even though they have no control over it. Parents tend to take on that guilt whether they can control it or not. Psychotherapist Dr. Robi

Ludwig advised against wallowing in mom guilt because it isn’t productive or helpful.

Don’t Be a Perfectionist Right Now

This is the time for imperfection and grace, there is no perfect. Right now, nothing is going to look perfect, look at the big picture instead. Use this time to the right way and figure out how to enjoy each other. If you can’t get to everything all at once, so be it.

A Loose, But Predictable, Schedule Can Help

Having a schedule can help your kids feel that everything is under control and also can give everyone something to look forward to. This can help our lives feel a bit more organized. Try to have a wakeup time, scheduled meal and time to go for a walk or play in the backyard.

Ask for Help in Specific Ways

This is an ideal time for moms to ask for help from their family members, even if that feels different or uncomfortable. “If you need help and you have slightly older kids have them be part of the process of making their bed or setting the table or clearing the table. Have an honest conversation with your partner and say, “I know we’re all stressed but is there any way you could do XYZ?” Try to be as specific in your requests as you can because you don’t want to leave things up to interpretation.
