How to Prepare For a Doctor’s Visit

To get the most out of your doctor’s visit, make sure you take the time to prepare for it. Not only will this make your visit smooth and simple, it will also ensure that you and your doctor have good communication and understanding with each other.

Bring your insurance card with you. After you enrolled in a plan, you should have gotten a card or other proof of your insurance in the mail. (If you didn’t get a card, contact your health plan.) Know what you are covered for and how much you pay out of pocket.

Know your family health history. Share with your doctor any family health history and medical records, if you have them. Share with your doctor your own medical history as well. Keep a journal of other doctor visits that you can discuss with your doctor. Sharing medical history with your doctor is crucial for the health and wellbeing of yourself.

Make a list of any medicines you take. Make sure to tell your provider the dosages. Your doctors need to know everything you are taking to better assess your health.

Bring a list of questions and things to discuss. Write down your questions or concerns in advance. You may want to bring a friend or family member with you to help.

Take notes. Jot down any questions that come up during your appointment. Don’t leave until all of your questions have been answered and you understand what to do next.

Follow up with your doctor if you need to.
