clock during fall

7 Ways The End of Day Light Saving Can Affect Our Health

This Sunday the clocks fell back an hour; many of us see the end of daylight saving time as a wonderful night of an extra hour of sleep. However, it can affect our health both in a negative and a positive way. Here are the 7 ways the end of day light saving can affect our health:

1. Heart attack rates go up down in the fall

A study showed that the Tuesday following the return to standard time in the fall was associated with a 21% reduction. Another study came to similar conclusions. The rate of heart attacks significantly in the first three weekdays after the spring transition, affecting more women. In the fall, however, the incidence rate was lower, affecting more men.

2. Sleep may be affected for up to a week

The first day of time change, everyone will may have some difficulties falling asleep at the new time when we are moving the clocks back and be may be more sleepy in the morning.

3. Immune system improves for four days

Setting the clocks back an hour can improve population health for about four days after daylight saving ends, because people slept about an hour more.

4. Suicide rates among men rise

According to an Australian study published in the Sleep and Biological Rhythms journal states, that suicide rates in the weeks after DST ends is significantly higher then any other time of the year.

5. More people seek help for depression

Researchers in Denmark looked into the records of more than 185,000 patients at the Danish Psychiatric Central Research Register from 1995 to 2012. They compared the trend in the incidence of hospital contacts for unipolar depressive episodes following the clock shifts. The transition from summer time to standard time was linked to an 11% increase in depressive episodes that lasted for about 10 weeks.

6. The fall shift mostly affects people under 65 years old

The effects of the time changes were consistently more noticeable in people under 65 years of age than in those who were older, according to the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

7. Stroke hospitalizations increase

Changing the clock — both in the spring and fall — has been associated with an increase in stroke hospitalizations in the following two days. The overall rise was 8% in that period. Women were more susceptible to the time changes than men. The risk was also higher for cancer patients and people over the age of 65.
