How Will The Big CVS-Aetna Deal Affect Employers and Their Benefits

Many employers are beginning to worry about the impact that the CVS-Aetna merge will have on worker benefits. A new survey says four in five employers think there will be “signifigant or moderate changes to the way people access healthcare in the future.” Aon polled 450 human resources executives from large and mid-size employers about the impact of deals including the proposed purchase by Aetna of CVS Health and Optum’s acquisition of DaVita Medical Group.

“These results tell us that employers think these deals, particularly a potential CVS/Aetna combination, are meaningful and will have important implications to the way employees and their families access health care,” said Jim Winkler, global chief innovation officer for Aon’s health & benefits group.

It is clear that employers are not okay with merging their pharmacy and medical benefits into a package that is controlled by one company. Aon said just “24% currently integrate medical and pharmacy with one company and anticipate no changes to their approach.” Although it is unclear how the CVS-Aetna deal will affect employers and their health insurance, employers are still preparing for what could happen.
