Blue Moon Eclipse 2018: How To Watch It Happen

Blue moon eclipse

For the first time in 35 years, a blue moon will occur during a total lunar eclipse on Jan. 31, an event some have taken to calling a “super blue blood moon.”

IThe alignment of the full moon will make it look like a “supermoon” due to its increased proximity to Earth, causing the satellite to appear slightly larger and brighter than usual. Additionally, it will mark the second full moon of the month, an event often described as a “blue moon.” And third, this full moon happens to fall during a total lunar eclipse, which is sometimes called a “blood

The blue moon eclipse is happening Wednesday January 31, 2018.  The times in the U.S. are 7:51 a.m. EST, or 4:52 a.m. PST, and it will last roughly 1 hour and 16 minutes.

The best place to watch the blue moon eclipse is definitely the West Coast since it will be dark when the blue moon eclipse is happening.  Unfortunately the time the blue moon eclipse begins on the East Coast, the sun will already be rising and the moon will have begun setting. East coasters will still be able to see it but it will not be as stunning as it could have if it were dark out. Asia and Australia will be getting a fantastic view.

Unlike a total solar eclipse, a total lunar eclipse cannot damage your eyes, making it safe to look at without any special glasses or equipment. Make sure you wake up early enough to see the moon in a prime position.
