Depression affects millions of people in the U.S.
Many people in the world live with depression. Depression has taken the place of back pain as the number one cause of disability. A study in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found that only about a third of newly diagnosed patients get treatment.
A study from Kaiser Permanente found that people over the age of 60 were half as likely to get treated as those under 44. The study also found that Asian-Americans, African-Americans, and Hispanic patients were less likely to get treatment than the white patients. Of those who sought treatment, over 80% chose antidepressants over therapy.
Unfortunately, the study did not go into why people are not seeking treatment or therapy. Some thoughts are that people are concerned about the social stigma of depression. People may feel embarrassed or ashamed that they have depression.
It is important to keep in mind of how severe depression is. If someone you know is struggling with depression, offer to get them help or treatment. Depression is serious and debilitating.
