Summer is here, and often times it means trips to the beach, pool, outdoor concerts, or BBQs. While having fun outside, you must stay hydrated. When you become dehydrated, that means your body doesn’t have enough fluid and/or electrolytes to work properly.
Drinking plain water can be boring, but I have great news. There are more options than just drinking water to stay hydrated this summer. Here are some tips to help you stay refreshed besides just drinking water.
- Eat more “water-rich” foods. Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, strawberries, grapefruit, cantaloupe, cucumbers, lettuce, zucchini, celery, and tomatoes.
- Try iced caffeine-free coffee. You may be surprised to know that coffee counts as part of your daily fluid intake. About 98 percent of your morning cup of coffee is water.
- Try drinking iced tea. There are many types of teas out there to choose from. Teas have about half the amount of caffeine as coffee. There are also herbal and caffeine-free fruit teas.
- Drink coconut water. Coconut water generally has fewer calories and added sugars than fruit juice. It’s also a good source of potassium.
- Eat cold soups, preferably broth-based. Gazpacho is one famous cold soup that originated in Spain. The main ingredients are tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, garlic, and onions.
- Drink coconut water. Coconut water generally has fewer calories and added sugars than fruit juice. It’s also a good source of potassium.
