Did you miss the Open Enrollment Period? Don’t worry—you may still have a chance to get health coverage through what’s called the Special Enrollment Period (SEP).
What is the Special Enrollment Period?
The Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is a window of time outside the annual Open Enrollment period during which you can apply for a new individual or family health insurance plan. This opportunity exists to ensure that people experiencing major life changes don’t go without the coverage they need.
Qualifying Life Events
To be eligible for SEP, you must experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). Common events include:
- Losing your current health insurance (e.g., job loss or aging out of a parent’s plan)
- Getting married or divorced
- Having a baby or adopting a child
- Moving to a new area with different health plans
- Gaining lawful immigration status
- Experiencing a death in the family that affects your coverage
These events typically allow you a 60-day window to apply for a new plan through the Marketplace at HealthCare.gov.
You May Qualify for Subsidies
Many people don’t realize they may qualify for financial help, also known as premium tax credits or subsidies, which significantly reduce the cost of your monthly premiums. In some cases, you could even qualify for $0/month plans depending on your income and household size.
At Cosmo Insurance Agency, our licensed agents are ready to:
- Help determine if you qualify for SEP
- Walk you through your coverage options
- Assist in applying for subsidies on HealthCare.gov
- Ensure your plan fits your needs and budget
Don’t Miss Your Window
Missing the SEP deadline means you may have to wait until the next Open Enrollment period unless another qualifying life event occurs. Take action now to protect yourself and your family’s health and finances.
