Many people are talking about the death of Actor Luke Perry known for his roles in Riverdale and Beverly Hill: 90210. He passed away from a massive stroke. When we hear about strokes in the news, the word “massive” is sometimes used to describe them.

What is a massive stroke?

According to Healthline, a stroke occurs when the blood supply to your brain is cut off. Brain cells that don’t receive oxygen die, which impacts your ability to function normally. A “massive” stroke means that a large portion of your brain was denied blood.

Signs of a stroke:

Numbness or weakness in face, arm, or leg especially on one side of the body.

Confusion trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.

Trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or lack of coordination.

Severe headache with no known cause.

Call 911 right away if you or someone else has any of these symptoms.

Acting FAST is key to helping a patient stroke who is having or had a stroke get treatment. If you think someone is having a stroke, act F.A.S.T and do the following test:

F – Face: ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face drop?

A – Arms: ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S – Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T – Time: if you see any of these signs, call 911 right away.
