COVID cases and hospitalizations have been on the rise, which has caused Gov. Phil Murphy to revere his stance and require everyone in K-12 schools to wear masks when the academic year begins.
“This is not an announcement that gives any of us or me personally any pleasure,” Murphy said at a Friday news conference. “But as the school year approaches and the numbers rapidly increasing, it is the one we need to make right now,” Murphy announced during a live press conference.
Who does the mask mandate apply to?
This mandate applies to all teachers, students, staff, and visitors to any school in New Jersey. This includes all public, private and parochial schools.
Are there exceptions to the mandate?
There are some exceptions to the mandate:
- Students with documented medical conditions or disabilities that make wearing a mask dangerous.
- “Rigorous activity” in gym class.
- Excessive heat.
- Playing a musical instrument.
- Eating in a classroom or cafeteria.
Do students have to wear a mask outdoors?
As of right now, it seems to only apply to indoor settings.
Will schools be going in-person and full-time?
Murphy said Friday that schools will reopen in-person and full-time.
