How to Protect Your Eyes During The Upcoming Solar Eclipse

On August 21, wherever you are be prepared to watch the solar eclipse and watch as the sun goes completely dark. The phenomenon will only last for no longer than two minutes and 40 seconds, according to NASA.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible to every state except for 14 that will have a total eclipse which include: Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. An estimated 300 million people will view the total eclipse.

Unfortunately, to look directly at the eclipsed or partially eclipsed sun during this event is only through special-purpose solar filters.

NASA recommends checking the safety and authenticity of eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers to make sure they meet all the following:

  • Have certification information with a designated ISO 12312-2 international standard.
  • Have the manufacturer’s name and address printed somewhere on the product.
  • Have no scratched or damaged lenses.
  • Do not use homemade filters.

Ordinary sunglasses — even very dark ones — should not be used as a replacement for eclipse-viewing glasses or handheld solar viewers.

Remember to enjoy the view and keep your vision safe. Cosmo Insurance Agency offers little to no cost vision insurance for both individuals and groups. Be sure to contact us as soon as possible so we can get your vision plan set up.
