New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s final briefing on the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic had one major announcement. The public health emergency was lifted today, Monday, March 7, 2022 the same day the statewide mask mandate for schools and daycare centers ends.
According to the governor, the mandate was “the big thrust” of the health emergency. The original date the public health emergency was planned to expire was March 11, 2022.
The order lifting the emergency ahead of schedule will allow the state to continue testing and vaccination programs and administer federal aid.
But even though the health emergency will end, the state’s requirement that workers in health care centers, prisons, and other “high-risk” congregant settings will not change. Those workers have until May 11 to be vaccinated and boosted, under an extended deadline announced Thursday, March 3, 2022.
