Our mental health well-being is just as important as our physical health. Unfortunately, insurers haven’t always seen it that way. In the past, many health insurance companies provided better coverage for physical illness than they did for mental health disorders. In 2008 the Mental Health Parity Act (MHPA) was passed required that if mental health services are offered, the coverage must be comparable to the physical health coverage offered.
Any health insurance plan that offers mental health services must cover:
- Behavioral health treatment, like psychotherapy, talk therapy, and counseling
- Mental and behavioral health inpatient services
- Substance use disorder (commonly known as substance abuse) treatment
However, the benefit amounts and limits are varied by state and plan. Keep in mind, just because a plan offers coverage for mental health doesn’t mean that all services are automatically covered. For example, stress caused by life changes like a move or financial difficulties may not be covered. Stress as a symptom of a medical condition like generalized anxiety disorder should be covered. Pre-existing mental or behavioral conditions (like substance use disorders) are also covered with the same deductibles, co-pays, visit limits, etc., as other new or existing physical or mental health issues.
