Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month

April brings many things from spring showers to warmer weather, but it also brings an important month of awareness for people on the Autism spectrum. The last few years have brought much more research, awareness, and acceptance to the issue but there is much still not known, and many people who still aren’t aware.

Did You Know

The CDC estimates that 1% of the world’s population has Autism, and 1 in 68 kids in the US end up with a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum? More than 3.5 million Americans are currently living with an Autism diagnosis. It is not uncommon, and families who are affected by Autism are not alone!

Spectrum Disorder

Many people don’t understand that Autism is a spectrum disorder, and Autism looks different for everyone who has it. Many kids diagnosed with Autism grow up to be successful adults, and many suffer very severe symptoms that make things like living alone difficult.
People with Autism often hear, “you don’t look like you’re Autistic,” but the simple truth is that no one does. Autism does not present with physical characteristics and does not have a specific, “look.”
