The abuse scandal of Larry Nassar vs. an alleged abused Olympic Gymnast is an eye opener to parents and caregivers to keep your antennas up for any signs of molestation or sexual abuse to children under your care. Nassar served as a volunteer trainer and doctor for the U.S. National team for close to 30 years, and will now be pleading guilty for child pornography. Other charges are still in trial.
Signs to look out for:
- Acting out in an inappropriate sexual way with toys or objects
- Nightmares, sleeping issues
- Becoming withdrawn or excessively clingy
- Becoming unusually secretive
- Sudden unexplained personality changes, mood swings and signs of insecurity
- Regressing to younger behaviors, e.g. bedwetting
- Unaccountable fear of particular places or people
- Impulsive lash outs
- Changes in eating habits
- New adult words for body parts and no obvious source
- mention of new older friend and unexplained money or gifts
- Self-harm (cutting, burning or other harmful activities)
- Physical signs including unexplained soreness or bruises around genitals or mouth as well as sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy
- Running away
- Not wanting to be alone with a particular person
