5 Steps Towards a Better Company Culture

Aaron Wieder – 5 Steps Towards a Better Company Culture

Do your employees enjoy working for you?

We are born into a society that tells us we have to work to provide for our basic needs and to grow as an individual. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, people need food, water, and shelter. As much as money is a key reason why people work according to Maslow’s people also have a strong desire for accomplishment and appreciation. Having a career that helps you accomplish all these fulfillments is important.

There are three kinds of employee commitment:

Affective Commitment – “I stay because I want to.” When an employee is committed to their company, they feel valued and identify with the company’s goals and mission.

Continuance Commitment – “I might as well stay.” Employees feel the need to stay at their job because of their current salary and benefits, and fear they won’t improve if they move to another company.

Normative Commitment – “I need a job.” Employees that have no connection at all to the company.

Employees said their top concerns would be their experience in the hiring process, the number of perks, programs and benefits a company offers to help workers with work-life balance and their connection with a company’s culture and values. (Spherion)

It is so essential to build your brand to be an organization that provides more than just a way to earn a living. Is your mission to help or to just make a dollar? Is your mission to build, support, and to grow your community?

These questions can make a tremendous difference in your employees.

The following are some ways to make a difference:

1. Make your business into a cause – organize volunteering and charity events show your employees how your business incorporates its core values.

2. Make sure to show employees appreciation for doing the jobs they are being paid to do.

Offer a benefits package that really benefits your employees.

Offer something creative that enhances your employee’s lives and helps them focus on the business.

3. Make sure your employees are working as a team where everyone feels safe to ask for help and admit mistakes.

4. Empower employees to find their strengths to help the organization. A more creative employee can help create campaigns or run team building activities, which will enhance employee morale.

5. Evaluate your business for “toxic” behaviors that are affecting employee morale. “One rotten apple can spoil the bunch”. An abrasive manager or co-worker can make an employee hate coming to work.

We want to achieve an emotional attachment to the organization! Make sure new employees receive the following.

a)     Great onboarding

b)     Mentoring

c)     Engagement

d)     Empowerment

e)     Recognition

We want our employees to come to work at our organization because that is what they want to do. They are proud to be part of the organization you have created and enjoy contributing to that culture.

Change is attainable, don’t continue suffering from low employee morale and a poor company culture. Take positive actions today, and enjoy a happier, more tolerable, and more productive workforce today.
