Women taking medication for asthma
Women who take short term medication for asthma can possibly be at risk for infertility.
A study done in the European Respiratory Journal followed 5,000 women who were expecting their first child. They were asked if they were diagnosed with asthma and which medications they take if they were. They then were asked how long it took them to conceive.
Ten percent of the women who had asthma took longer to get pregnant than those without asthma. Researchers found that the women who were taking long term medication for asthma conceived just as quickly as the women who did not have asthma.
Women who took short term medication for asthma took 20% longer to get pregnant.
Researchers do not know for sure why asthma can lead to infertility or fertility issues. Asthma can cause inflammation in the breathing tubes. Luke Grzeskowiak at the University of Adelaide, Australia, who led the study. “As well as affecting the lungs, asthma could cause inflammation elsewhere in the body, including the uterus. It could also affect the health of eggs in the ovary.”
