California health care professionals and lawmakers are in the midst of planning a new health insurance plan for their residents. Their hopes are to offer a public insurance option that will compete with private companies.

Their three goals are to:

1. Increase subsidies for residents who are purchasing insurance through Obamacare

2. Cover most undocumented immigrants

3. Lower prescription drug costs

“We think this is a path that gets us to universal care and coverage,” said Anthony Wright, executive director for Health Access. “We don’t see this in any way as competing with the broader reform efforts. In fact, this gets us closer to a ‘Medicare-for-all’ type system, and if the window of opportunity opens at the federal level, that means we’ll be this much closer to take the leap when it’s possible

The proposals will be discussed between the state legislatures.
