short-term health insurance plans will be extended

Trump has proposed short term health plans that are not a part of the Affordable Care Act’s benefit requirements and consumer protections.  Alex Azar said that the administration would rewrite federal rules that will extend the short term health plans to twelve months.

Short term health insurance plans are designed for individuals who are in between jobs or are in need of temporary coverage for other reasons.  Insurers can deny people with pre-existing health conditions and can charge higher premiums because of these conditions.

“It’s one step in the direction of providing Americans with health insurance options that are both more affordable and more individualized for families’ circumstances,” Azar said in a conference call with reporters to announce the proposed rule.

The administration hopes this would be an easier way for individuals to purchase an alternative type of insurance that has a lower cost, less benefits, and weaker government protections.
