Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day! This day is meant to provide support, educate and create awareness for those who are suffering or know someone who has suffered a miscarriage, a still birth, an ectopic pregnancy, or the loss of an infant. Too many families grieve in silence, sometimes never coming to terms with their loss.
Research shows that approximately 1 in 4 pregnancies end in a miscarriage and 24,000 babies are stillborn each year in the United States.
As a society, we are so quick to touch a pregnant women’s belly but we are bad at recognizing and talking about this type of loss. Most of the time people don’t know what to say or do so they end up saying something stupid or nothing at all. As a society we need to start talking about this subject so parents don’t feel that they need to forget or “get over” their loss but to learn to cope and live with their loss.
In October 1988, President Ronald Reagan designated October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month to recognize the losses that so many parents have experienced around the world.
