For most people, open enrollment means stress and headaches but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you start planning earlier and take the right steps open enrollment can be painless. Follow these steps and enrollment will be a breeze.
1. Gather all the documents you need before you start applying. When you apply for health insurance or renew your existing coverage, you’ll need to give household, income and current coverage information. Save yourself time and stress by having all the documents you need from the checklist below:
a. Personal information for everyone applying for coverage.
i. Name
ii. Date of Birth
iii. Social Security Numbers
b. Household size
c. Home and/or mailing addresses for everyone applying
d. Documents for legal immigrants
e. Tax filling information
f. Employer and income information, for everyone in your household
i. W-2 Forms
ii. Pay-Stubs
iii. 1099 Forms
g. Best educated estimate of what your household income will be in 2019
h. Policy numbers for your current health insurance plans to help you review
i. List of your preferred doctors and current medications to help select the right plan for you and everyone in your household
2. If you have 2018 Marketplace coverage, review your current application to make sure its sill accurate. If it’s not, you must update your application with any income and/or household changes.
3. Set yourself an Open Enrollment deadline reminder. Open Enrollment begins November 1st and ends December 15th. If you have don’t act by the deadline and have a 2018 Marketplace plan, you may be automatically enrolled in the same plan for 2019, which may not be the best option for you.
Mark your calendars, November 1st is the start of Open Enrollment and December 15 is the deadline. You don’t want to miss this! If you don’t enroll by the deadline you will not be able to receive coverage until Open Enrollment of 2020!
