Today is National Doughnut Day, but I know what you’re thinking wasn’t national doughnut day just in June. Yes, you are absolutely correct! There are actually two national doughnut days, November 5 and the first Friday in June.
How did these two national doughnut days come to be?
The history of June’s National Doughnut Day was created by the Salvation Army to honor the young women who were sent to serve doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. These women were known as the “doughnut lassies” or “doughnut dollies” and were sent to the battlefields of Europe to provide coffee and doughnuts to the troops and boost morale. The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American soldiers were then commonly called “doughboys.” The Salvation Army officially declared the first Friday of June to be National Doughnut Day in 1938 to honor the work of the lassies.
It’s unknown how November 5th National Doughnut Day came to be. However, in theory the creation of November’s Doughnut Day could have to do with the proximity to Veterans Day (November 11). It’s possible that this day was created by a bakery/store chain to celebrate veterans but it is not actually known for sure.
It’s likely both days are related to honor and celebrate veterans. Celebrate this day by stopping by your favorite doughnut shop and indulge in a fresh doughnut or try making your own.
